A strong research focus puts the Commission for Case Manager Certification in the forefront of the certification processes currently available. An extensive body of empirical research identified the competencies and job functions that constitute the practice of case management.

CCMC research advanced the practice of case management in seven important ways:

  • Established the professional identity of case managers.
  • Described the uniqueness of the practice.
  • Defined case management core competencies and the overall role of case managers.
  • Created a leadership role through peer review resulting in certification and certification renewal.
  • Identified the shared competency areas of case management as well as comparing case management to other related disciplines.
  • Developed and adopted a Scope of Practice document as well as a Code of Professional Conduct for case managers.
  • Supported the Standards of Practice document developed by the Case Management Society of America.
